How to Assemble a Saxophone
Assembly: strap → neck → wet reed on mouthpiece → mouthpiece on neck. Never reverse.
Assembly: A Non-Reversible Pipeline
Step 1: Neck Strap First
The very first thing when taking the saxophone from its case. The strap takes the instrument's weight — your safety line against drops.
Step 2: Install the Neck
Loosen the screw, apply cork grease evenly, then twist in — never force straight in. Grease prevents cork from wearing thin and leaking air.
Step 3: Wet the Reed
Wash hands first. Place reed in mouth for ~30 seconds. Align reed tip flush with mouthpiece tip, center on window, then attach ligature.
Step 4: Insert Mouthpiece into Neck
Apply cork grease, twist in. Depth affects pitch — deeper = higher, shallower = lower.
Disassembly
Strict reverse order. Store reed in a reed case lying flat — warping is the #1 reed killer.
