How to Clean and Maintain a Saxophone

The 30-Minute Post-Playing Care Window

Core rule: Clean within 30 minutes of playing. The longer moisture stays inside, the faster pads stick, cork molds, and springs rust.

Five-Step Cleaning

1. Reed & mouthpiece: Wash reed, dry, store in case. Wipe mouthpiece inside, cap it.
2. Remove neck, wipe inside: Loosen screw, swab neck interior dry.
3. Swab the body: Pull cleaning cloth from bell to other end. Don't put wet cloth in the case with the instrument.
4. Blot pads: Press each key, place absorbent paper between pad and tone hole, hold 2-3 seconds.
5. Wipe exterior: Soft cloth on body. Avoid needle springs — they snag and bend.

Before Playing

Rinse your mouth with clean water. Food residue and acidic saliva corrode pads and cork.
