How to Learn Jazz Saxophone
Three Starting Steps
- Listen: Extensively to masters. Charlie Parker's agility, John Coltrane's fire, Sonny Rollins' narrative, Kenny G's smoothness.
- Sing along: Follow recordings, feel the swing rhythm.
- Slow: Practice swing feel on long tones and simple scales first.
Three Jazz Elements
- Syncopation: Move accents to weak beats or between beats
- Swing: Eighth notes in "long-short" uneven division
- Blue notes: 3rd and 7th degrees lowered for melancholy color
