How to Start Improvising on Saxophone
Not random playing. Start with blues scale and 12-bar blues.
Improvisation Is Not Random Playing
It's harmonic conversation — letting notes flow with the current chord.
Starting Path
- Blues scale (6 safe notes): Sounds good over any chord
- 12-bar blues (safety net): Only I-IV-V, simplest improvisation field
- Read chord symbols: II-V-I is basic grammar
- Map chords to scales: Major 7→Ionian, minor 7→Dorian, dominant 7→Mixolydian
- Record and review: Mark good phrases and clashing ones
Three-Step Practice
- Single-chord phrasing (one chord, one scale)
- II-V-I navigation (follow chord changes)
- Record and build phrase library
