How to Breathe When Playing Saxophone
Diaphragmatic breathing: diaphragm drops, waist expands. Not shallow chest breathing.
Diaphragmatic Breathing: The Correct Way
Why Not Chest Breathing
Chest breathing (shoulder shrugging) is shallow, small capacity, unstable. Saxophone needs deep, steady airflow.
How to Breathe Diaphragmatically
- Inhale: Diaphragm drops, waist naturally expands. Imagine smelling a flower — air goes DOWN, not UP.
- Exhale: Diaphragm supports steadily, releases slowly. Don't dump all air at once.
Practice Methods
Lying down: Lie on bed/floor, place a book on your belly. Inhale — book rises. Exhale — book lowers. 5 minutes daily.
Standing: Hands on waist sides. Feel waist expand outward when inhaling.
Common Mistakes
- ❌ Shoulder rising (chest breathing sign)
- ❌ Chest lifting on inhale
- ❌ Dumping all air at once on exhale
