7 Common Saxophone Embouchure Mistakes

Common mistakes: chin up, corner leaks, puffed cheeks, off-center mouthpiece, biting too hard.

7 Common Embouchure Mistakes

1. Chin Pushed Up

Symptom: Chin muscles push upward, chin tip juts out. Fix: Relax chin downward, like saying 'oo'.

2. Corner Air Leaks

Symptom: Cheeks don't seal against jaw, air escapes from corners. Fix: Pull cheeks in tight against jaw to fill the space.

3. Puffed Cheeks

Symptom: Cheeks balloon out like blowing up a balloon. Fix: Cheeks should be "pulled in" not "puffed out".

4. Off-Center Mouthpiece

Symptom: Mouthpiece tilts to one side instead of aligning with center. Fix: Check in mirror — mouthpiece centerline aligns with face centerline.

5. Biting Too Hard

Symptom: Jaw clamps down on mouthpiece, sound is tight and muffled. Fix: Firm yet relaxed — lips are tire walls, not pliers.

6. Lower Lip Not Covering Teeth

Symptom: Reed touches lower teeth directly, sound is harsh. Fix: Roll lower lip inward to form a cushion over teeth.

7. Wrong Depth

Symptom: Too deep = muffled, too shallow = airy. Fix: Find sweet spot by testing both directions.
