Long Tones: The Most Advanced Fundamental
Long tones aren't just "holding a note." They simultaneously train: breath support, tone stability, dynamic control, and pitch perception.
How to Practice
- Start in middle register (easiest range)
- One breath, one note, target 8-15 seconds
- Check three things: stable pitch, even tone, consistent volume
- 10 minutes daily
- Add dynamics: pppp to ffff
- Practice both up and down
Why Long Tones Matter
- Build breath support and stability
- Develop tone consistency
- Train pitch perception
- Foundation for tonguing ("half of tonguing is prepaid in long tones")
Common Mistakes
- Only chasing duration without quality checks
- Only practicing ascending, not descending
- Thinking "longer is always better"
