Saxophone Overtones: A Beginner's Guide

Overtones are altissimo foundation. Same fingering, pure mouth/throat/air control.

Overtones: The Foundation for Altissimo

One Note Is Never "Just One Note"

The air column vibrates simultaneously: fundamental (loudest) + a series of overtones (softer harmonics). Same fingering, pure mouth/throat/air can flip sound up level by level.

Practice

  1. Fix lowest note fingering, don't move
  2. Hear target pitch mentally first
  3. Mouth + air let sound "jump" up (not forced)
  4. Hold each level to long-tone standard
  5. Practice both directions

Four Traps

  • Moving fingers to find notes
  • Forcing/blowing hard
  • Chasing sound without stability
  • Inconsistent practice

Timeline

Results take months. 5 minutes daily beats 40 minutes once a week.
