Why Is My Saxophone Tonguing Not Clear?
Three causes: root movement, over-biting, per-note air breaks.
Three Tonguing Faults
Fault 1: Root Movement
Symptom: Muddy attacks, throat/neck/face all moving. Fix: Isolate tongue tip. Hold air, only let tongue tip tap "tu" near palate. Check in mirror: chin moving? Jaw moving?
Fault 2: Over-Biting
Symptom: Harsh, dead tone, explosive attacks. Fix: Subtract. Minimize contact to smallest tongue tip point, reduce force to "touch and retreat."
Fault 3: Per-Note Air Breaks
Symptom: Air stops and restarts for every note, rough attacks. Fix: Return to long tones. Blow one long note, use tongue to gently interrupt mid-stream — abdomen supply never changes.
Prevention Toolkit
- Mirror: Watch while practicing
- Recording: Muddy/explosive sounds are immediately obvious on playback
- Slow practice: All faults only become visible at slow speeds
