How to Play Saxophone for the First Time
Your very first time: assembly, wetting the reed, forming embouchure, and producing your first sound.
Your Complete First-Time Guide
Follow this step-by-step process the very first time you pick up a saxophone.
1. Take It Out of the Case
Carefully remove the body. Check for loose parts.
2. Attach the Neck Strap
Always strap first. This is your safety line. Adjust length so the instrument hangs at your right front.
3. Install the Neck
Apply cork grease to the cork. Twist in gently — don't force it. Don't tighten the screw yet.
4. Wet the Reed
Wash your hands first. Place the reed in your mouth for about 30 seconds. A dry reed vibrates poorly and cracks easily.
5. Attach Reed to Mouthpiece
Align reed tip flush with mouthpiece tip. Center the reed on the window. Tighten the ligature — snug but not crushing.
6. Insert Mouthpiece into Neck
Apply cork grease, twist in. Deeper = higher pitch, shallower = lower pitch.
7. Form Your Embouchure
- Mouth in O-shape (like saying 'ah')
- Lower lip rolled over lower teeth
- Upper teeth resting on mouthpiece
- About 1/3 of the mouthpiece in your mouth
8. Play Your First Note
Take a deep breath (diaphragm drops, waist expands), blow steadily. If you hear sound — congratulations!
