Standard Embouchure in Three Rules

Rule 1: O-Shape

Mouth forms an O, like saying 'ah'. Not 'ee' (too tight) or open 'ah' (too loose). 'Ah' naturally creates the right oval shape.

Rule 2: Lower Lip Over Lower Teeth

The lower lip acts as a soft cushion, rolled inward to cover lower teeth. The reed rests on this cushion — it's NOT bitten by teeth.

Rule 3: Upper Teeth on Mouthpiece

Upper teeth rest lightly on top of the mouthpiece, providing a stable anchor point. This creates the "hard top, soft bottom" structure.

How Deep

Reference: about 1/3 in, upper teeth ~1.27cm from tip. This is a starting point, not the final answer.

Finding Your Sweet Spot

Test from shallow to deep AND deep to shallow. Listen for the spot with both warm woodwind richness AND bright metallic clarity.

Core State

Firm yet relaxed: Lips form a firm seal, but face/jaw/neck stay relaxed. Like a tire: rubber has strength, but the inside is flexible.
