How to Play the Saxophone

Complete beginner flow: assemble → posture → embouchure → breathe → first note.

From Zero to Sound: Complete Flow

1. Assemble

Strap → neck → reed → mouthpiece (order matters).

2. Posture

Strap carries weight, body aligned, mouthpiece at 45 degrees.

3. Embouchure

  • O-shape (like 'ah')
  • Lower lip over teeth
  • Upper teeth on mouthpiece
  • About 1/3 in

4. Breathing

Diaphragmatic: diaphragm drops, waist expands. Not shallow chest breathing.

5. Produce Sound

Take a deep breath, blow steadily. If you hear sound — congratulations, you've completed step one.

Common Problems

  • No sound: Check reed is wet, embouchure is correct
  • Very quiet: Embouchure too loose, seal cheeks
  • Squeaking: Reed misaligned or embouchure too tight
